St. James Minor Seminary
About Our School

St. James' Seminary was founded in 1925 by the Holy Ghost (Spiritan) Fathers who evangelized the Vicariate of Kilimanjaro. The then Vicariate of Kilimanjaro had given birth to the Catholic Dioceses of Moshi, Tanga, Same, Kondoa, Arusha and Mbulu. St. James was established as the minor Seminary and it has remained so up to now. The main purpose of this Seminary is to train young indigenous men for purpose of serving the Church as priests and good leaders of the society. When one looks back at the history of St. James, one has to thank God for the many fruits. In the early years the seminary had a capacity of taking few students. Now concurrently the Seminary has the capacity of admitting up to three hundred students. The total number of students registered and graduated to date is four thousand and seventy-seven students (4,077). Among those we have five hundred priests, some belonging to the Catholic Diocese of Moshi and others to different dioceses and congregations. Among the priests who studied at the Seminary, twelve were ordained bishops including our current bishop Rt. Rev. Ludovick Joseph Minde ALCP/OSS. St. James has not only given spiritual and pastoral leaders, but also it is a spring of good civic, social and economic leaders in and outside the nation.
About our Rector

A NOTE FROM THE RECTOR
Welcome to St. James’ Minor Seminary, the Diocesan Seminary in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi – Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. St. James’ Minor Seminary is located at the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, 36 kilometers from Moshi town center.
I am Fr. Pastor Mafikiri, the New Rector assigned by the Bishop in August 1st, 2023 this year. I was a student at this very seminary when I was young from 1985 to 1991 when I graduated Form VI. I was ordained a priest in 1999 and enjoyed my apostolate in parishes where I was assigned. I was sent to USA for further studies and apostolate from 2010 to 2023 and I thank God that I am back home to continue with my apostolate now as a Rector.
I cordially welcome you all to support our seminary spiritually and financially. Our seminary is in dire need of people like you, who carry within them the promise of a better future, of a stronger, more inclusive and more humane society. Please continue to flourish, to contribute to our seminary while realizing the endowments and talents that are unique to you.
May God Bless You and Keep You Safe Always! Be assured of incessant prayers from St. James’ Minor Seminary Community.
Fr. Pastor Mafikiri
